At the top of a climbing web in a playground in Vienna.
6 p.m.
Ixi, 3 years old: "I'm scared"
Me: "Of what?"
Ixi: "Ghosts"
Me: "Why are you scared of them?"
Ixi: "They're making noises in the bushes. They're gonna eat us!"
Me: (trying to be very serious): "No, Ixi! Ghosts can't eat you, they're made out of air. They don't need to eat. And they're more scared of you than you are of them. If you see one, just yell "BOO!" as loud as you can. They'll fly away immediately."
Ixi: "BOO!"
Me: "That was really good."
Ixi: "I can scream louder."
Me: "I'm sure you can."
She screams. Passerbys look at us worriedly. Because it's as dark as the night gets and it's a playground in a massive park. We've all seen the creepy things on TV.
Me: "Okay, okay, I think they're all gone now!"
Her brother, Nico, 4 years old, joins in. Two kids screaming like they're screaming for their lives.
Me: "Yeah...they're gone."
In retrospect...Next time I'm screaming with them. I sense big buckets of fun in that.
(I'm very sociable but, really, I just like the tophat)
